Benedict Weobong

Dr. Benedict Weobong holds degrees in psychology and mental health epidemiology from the Universities of Ghana and London. A global mental health epidemiologist and academic, his research focuses on instrument development, perinatal depression, alcohol and substance use, mental healthcare systems, and health promotion interventions. His work is guided by three strands of global mental health: developing and evaluating psychological treatments, scaling up evidence-based interventions in primary healthcare, and creating school-based health and wellbeing programs, all utilizing task-sharing strategies. Currently, Dr. Weobong’s research activities include developing a step-up care intervention for adolescent depression and anxiety in Ghana, evaluating a routine health check-up program for adolescents, and building a new generation of global mental health researchers through doctoral and postdoctoral training. His research has been funded by NIHR, GCRF, Fondation Botnar, WHO, FCDO, and Wellcome Trust.Dr. Weobong serves as an Academic Editor at PLOS ONE and is an Editorial Board Member at BMC Psychiatry. Before joining York University, he taught and supervised undergraduate and postgraduate students in social and behavioral sciences at the School of Public Health, University of Ghana.
